Derbi GPR EV - Electric Bike

Like the picture above, this is an electric motor based GPR 125 that has been built by Spanish moto manufacturer Derbi. This would be the first factory electric Derbi, but not the first electric GPR. Todd Kollin, of 2009 Open class TTXGP winner Electric Motorsport, has been converting GPR50’s to electric power for quite some time. We don’t yet know if Electric Motorsport is entering a bike in the US TTXGP rounds in 2010.

But after testing and observed the bike was then shown not-so-silently navigating the tight switchbacks of Parc Motor De Castelloli in Barcelona, Spain and doing it fairly quickly. The GPR EV was built by Derbi and uses a Sevcon Gen 4 AC motor controller and AC Perm motor which should produce some impressive results. Perhaps part of the 150 Million Euro loan taken out a year ago by parent company Piaggio to develop hybrid and electric transportation might have helped in this effort. There has been a credible mention that Piaggio will enter the TTXGP with a Derbi branded electric motorcycle.

The bike’s frame follows the same line as the Puma stripe, while the grill incorporates shapes from the Puma cell range, tire treads on their part follow the sole pattern on Puma shoes. More than a 100 manufacturers in the automotive industry are trialling Valence batteries, which employ safe lithium iron magnesium phosphate chemistry.

The bike weighs in at 290kg and has a peak power output of 50hp, with the ability to accelerate from 0-60mph in 4 seconds and go on to a top speed of 100mph. 2009 Mac Motorcycles Unveils Plans for New Motorcycle Range

New British Motorcycle Brand: 'Mac Motorcycles' Unveils Plans for a Range of new Motorcycles. A collaboration between one of the UK's leading motorcycle design studios, Xenophya Design and Ellis Pitt has led to the launch of a new British motorcycle company called 'Mac Motorcycles'.

Ellis has collaborated with the team at Xenophya for the past 9 months to design a small range of lightweight, air-cooled singles using the 500cc Buell 'Blast' motor in a tubular backbone frame.

Ellis explains "Between us we'd designed, modified, built and ridden all sorts of motorcycles over the last 30 years and thought it was time to produce a motorcycle that reflected our philosophy. Our influences have been diverse and we've made unusual connections between genres of motorcycles such as choppers, Italian singles from the 1950s, flat-trackers and competition specials. What underpins Mac Motorcycles' philosophy though is the belief that the riding experience and the stories that go with motorcycle journeys seem to have been hijacked by technology and plastic."

There are 4 different models ; 'Spud', for dossing about on, 'Ruby', the motorcycle equivalent of 'the girl-next-door', 'Peashooter', for squirting to your favourite pub and gassing with your mates and the 'Roarer', a modern-day dinosaur-chaser! The company initially plans to produce a few hundred bikes in small batches increasing production as appropriate.
